The Mekong Delta provinces are entering the 2024 flood season. Floods in July are forecast to be low and will not affect summer-autumn and autumn-winter rice production.

According to the Southern Institute of Water Resources Planning, the flood level in July in the Mekong Delta is forecast to be low and has an upward trend. By July 31, the flood level on the Mekong Delta mainstream in the upstream area is forecast to be at its highest level of 2 m in Tan Chau, 1.95 m in Chau Doc. In the central region of the Mekong Delta, the water level is forecast to be 1.45 m in Can Tho; 1.37 m in My Thuan.

The inland water level in the upper Mekong Delta in July was mainly affected by upstream floods, high tides, and partly by inland rain. The forecast maximum water level at the upstream stations varied from 0.39 to 2.33 m, with the water level trending higher in the upstream areas along the main river, gradually decreasing towards the downstream areas away from the main river and towards the inland areas.

Water levels are from 1.13 to 2.33 m high, concentrated in An Phu district, Tan Chau town, Chau Doc city, Phu Tan district, Long Xuyen city, Tinh Bien district of An Giang province; Hong Ngu district, Hong Ngu city, Tan Hong district, Tam Nong district of Dong Thap province.

The water level in the mid-Mekong Delta in July is mainly affected by upstream floods, high tides and inland rains. The highest water level at the mid-region stations is forecast to vary between 0.55 and 1.48 m. The water level tends to be high in the main riverside areas, gradually decreasing towards the areas away from the main river and inside the inland fields.

Water levels are from 1.00 to 1.48 m high, concentrated in Go Cong Dong district, My Tho city of Tien Giang province; Cho Lach district, Chau Thanh district, Ben Tre city of Ben Tre province; Cao Lanh district, Lai Vung district of Dong Thap province; Tam Binh district, Vung Liem district, Tra On district of Vinh Long province; Cang Long district of Tra Vinh province; districts of Can Tho city; Nga Bay city of Hau Giang province, Long Phu district of Soc Trang province.

Also in July, the inland water level in the coastal areas of the Mekong Delta is mainly affected by tides and inland rain. The maximum water level at coastal stations is forecast to vary from 0.38 to 1.75 m. The water level tends to be high in the areas along the main river mouths and the East Sea, gradually decreasing towards the areas away from the main river, the West Sea and inside the inland fields.

Water levels are from 1.00 to 1.75 m high, concentrated in Binh Dai, Ba Tri, Thanh Phu districts of Ben Tre province; Chau Thanh, Duyen Hai districts of Ben Tre province; Tran De, Vinh Chau districts of Soc Trang province; Bac Lieu city, Hoa Binh district, Dong Hai district of Bac Lieu province.

Because the flood in July is not expected to be high, it will hardly affect the summer-autumn and autumn-winter rice production areas, except for the production areas outside the protected areas that need to be harvested before this time.

Corresponding to the flood level at the end of July of 2 m in Tan Chau, the system of embankments and dikes basically meets the requirements for production protection. However, production areas outside the embankments in the upstream provinces of the Mekong River such as An Giang, Dong Thap, Long An (especially in Long An province because the production area outside the embankments in this locality is still quite large) need to be closely monitored and have timely response solutions.
